Yellow nails often occur in presence of a mycosis. In this case, it is recommended to take care of your nails immediately, otherwise they will thicken and become dry and brittle. In severe cases, your nail base layer may retract. Women’s Health also specifies that yellowing could also be caused by smoke, fake nails or gel manicure. More rarely, yellow nails indicate serious health problems, such as thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes or psoriasis.
